Blog entry for "The Dustin Rogan Project"
February 28th 2008:
Let me first start off this entry by saying that I'm happy to be submitting my 2nd entry to a DVXuser fest. My name is Dustin Robert Rogan. Today I will try to befriend this couple that moved into my apartment below me. They seem nice enough, that they would want to befriend this handsome sir that is me. Sometimes you have to take risks...you know? Maybe we can make some home-made queso or something.
I'm developing many ideas for this fest. I tend to have excellent ideas, so my mom tells me, but fall short of them, much like my dad used to tell me.
Matt keeps begging Gary and I for a part in one of our movies. To be honest I don't think he has the chops for anything. You could stick the guy in a role in the Alamo and people would still say he wasn't Mexican enough. He makes for a better fluffer, I think.
More to come later.

February 29th 2008:
Today is Leap Day. or Leap Year Day...basically only happens 25 times a century.
Today I grow with hatred towards my regular job. I feel stagnant. Like a dog chasing his tail, or a cat with his tail nailed to the floor. Going no where.
I've outlined my script, and locking down actors so far going great!
As for the couple that moved into the apartment below me. I went down to talk to them yesterday. Had hopes of hitting it off rather smoothly, you know make a great first impression. But that was farthest from what happen. They have a little Boston terrier named Herman. Cute lil guy, that is until he hiked his leg and pissed on my foot. I proceeded to say an obscenity, which offended Tammy. I apologized, but it fell upon deaf ears because she was already back into the apartment when I'd said "I'm sorry". So, looks like the queso will be a solo event this time around. I'm still holding out hope on the Bannister's. They seem like good people.

Hey Dustin, I am enjoying your Blog entries. Have used the Dear Diary format before and planned to utilize it on this project as I tackle some new elements.
Shame about the downstairs neighbors. I can't believe that they/she would be offended at any comment after her dog pisses on you!
Whatever. I hope that works out.
A surprise, huh? Pretty early to be dropping THAT on us. You are going to tease us for 3 1/2 months??? :)
Welcome and Good Luck!

March 2nd 2008:
I've completed the 3rd draft of the script. I'm happy with what I've come up with. I'd been done with the final draft if it weren't for Gary and Matt sidetracking me. Bringing up crappy movies and saying that I need to watch them. There is even talk that I need to get my own computer (currently typing on Gary's Laptop) They say they're going to start a fund for me to get my own computer. I reminded them my birthday is coming up (3 months away) Honestly I don't know why or how I hang with these two. I am dumber for had listen to them talk. I mean seriously they're arguing right now at this moment how much they pay for a flash drive and that their Jim Carrey / Jeff Daniels duo if they were on screen...
PS Gary says he'll post the movies I said were a waste of my time...its all a lie, or he's going to post a list of really crap-ass movies, that would really be a waste of my time...
PSS or he's not going to post anything at all...and I've fallen for their trap...and will have to retract above blog...and then be a waste of your time...

March 4th 2008:
I didn't get much accomplished yesterday, I was so tired from the night before. Gary, Matt and I were up writing the newest script for Time Fest. I literally slept from 12:30pm to 3:30 am. I think I was a bear in a past life or something. Is it really possible to sleep to much? I don't think so. I'm chipper today where I'd normally be a big pr*ck.
I think I'm happy with the 3rd version of the script. I just need to slim it down a bit.
Waiting on Theme approval from Moderator.
This type of movie by far has not been done by us at Arcade Media. Thinking of the "style" I would like to do this ditty in.
I'm getting laughs from people who read the script. Namely people who are privileged that get to read it.
Other than that, this project is under tightest of securities, and actors have signed a confidentiality agreement...Yes its that Awesome.

March 5th 2008:
The Day after the Primaries. Ahh the chaos that ensues in a newsroom, from all the local coverage of people who are voting. Something got me thinking on a story we aired last night. The fact that some people are persuaded on their vote just by how many signs a candidate puts up. Which lead me to think, if people who are voting don't know what they're voting for, and enough of them are doing this, the wrong person could be elected. But as a person who chooses not to vote, I don't complain about the government. Only thing I say is if you're in the Presidents shoes, how good of a job would you do with people breathing down your neck and your life under a microscope. How easy would it be to run this country that we all love? Other that that, glad primaries are over for now, and get back to some normalcy around here.
I'm about to storyboard out my movie, plan camera shots, etc...
Let me take this time to say that I LOVE making movies, its almost like a drug. It soothes me and makes me feel like I'm worth something to the world. Thank you DVXuser for allowing me to feel this way, otherwise I'd be the same ol' pr*ck that wakes up to early and yells at people. Thank you Sirs

Well said, Dustin.
And I am glad that you survived your primaries. Probably a good idea if you never move to Iowa or New Hampshire!
I agree about the "lemmings..." but too bad you don't vote. Though it seems like a tiny drop in the sea, you do make a difference.
NOW GET ON WITH THOSE STORYBOARDS!!! :)

I have discovered a new addiction...Rock Band. Its like Guitar Hero...but you better. I stayed up way past my bedtime, at Bravos house playing it.
Anyways...
I'm about 1/3 of the way planning shot out for the flick. Made a few minor adjustments to the script. Mainly taking time off from the script as to not get burned out on it quickily.
Watched the movie 'The Number 23'...and like I usually do, I am easily swayed to peer pressure. And started looking for 23s. Just like when I watched Superman Returns, I thought I could stop a bullet with my eye...(didn't try, in case you were wondering), and Fight Club thought I was a "Billy Bad-Ass"...
Anyhoos I think this weekend I'm gonna get cracking set a schedule for shooting, locations, and such.
Thanks for reading about my adaptation on my so called life,

So I wake up this morning 3:30am, as usual. Walk outside to something that people of the south aren't very accustom to. FREAKIN' SNOW!!! But like most rare snows in Texas, it didn't stick. The flakes were huge, and there were thousands of them...snow always puts a smile on my face, then I step outside and immediately loose the smile to a few choice words, and curse the fact that this is Texas...its supposed to be warm!!! But I digress...
Looking into getting a Spiderbrace. Anyone have one and/or would that be a good investment? Or ways to make a homemade one that'll do just as good as a Spiderbrace.

HAHAHA!!! Snow? You want snow? Come up to NH... We've got snow.
I have spent the last 2 days clearing the snow from my roofs and driveway. There has been SO MUCH this year that it has packed down to a 5 inch sheet of ice. I have been outside swinging a huge pick to break it all up and get it out of my dirt driveway before it melts and turns into MUD.
Anyway, cool (or not so cool) that you got a bit of snow! :)
good luck on the Spiderbrace!

No Thank you on the Snow invite! I live in Texas for a reason...and thats one of them. I absolutely hate the cold. I have been seeing all the snow you Yankees have been getting. (I refer to anyone north of the Red River (OK/TX border for those that don't know) as Yankees...so think of it as a term of endearment. lol, can't talk bad about being a Yankee, my mother is one, but she says she got to Texas as soon as she could, HAHA.

Isn't this insane, just last week I was driving around with the AC running and now I'm freaking out over the snow. Even though it's mostly gone now, the snow did stick around for a little while. I have photographic proof.

Nothing new to report. Just stayed up 24 hours Friday Morning to Saturday morning. So I could sleep and not be tired whilst filling in for the weekend Director at work. I probably should get to work on my movie. Took a week off as not to get burned out to quickily.
I made a prototype of my own Spiderbrace out of PVC pipe. Surprisingly it didn't take to long to actually put together. and could theoretically work...all for about $5. well i do still have to buy a bolt to screw into the camera...but yeah it could work. We need to make a few adjustments to it. I'll have to call Gary to take pics if you guys want to see it...(noting special) but I feel like I did something lol instead of wasting my life away playing SOCOM online.

Hey Dustin man. Lots of composers on here are willing to score for free. Hit up Herman Witkam, see if he's got the time... there are lots on here. Listen to their stuff, see what you like best, then send them a PM.
Other than that, how is everything going? Is it nice and toasty down there in Texas? It's supposed to get into the high 60's starting tomorrow here in ol' Nebraska.

So as for my "problem" at work. I've been running tests...and so far, they've been running smoothily. I no longer talk to the person that infuriates me. This has made the newscasts run alot smoother.
Other notable things...my lower back is achey this morning due to the overplaying of Skeeball at Chuck E Cheese with my daughter, last night. It was fun, almost got the jackpot 3 times...Then it took literally 15 mins for her to deside what she was going to spend her 1,026 tickets on. She opted for the mini-bowling set.

Dustin, I cannot believe that you had to even "debate" the decision to hire Fred and Sharon. OMG. How could you even think of letting an opportunity like that pass by. Do you have them booked??? Are they available???

Well, I'm unable to book these fine neighbors to the north...They asked if the entire movie could take place on greenscreen, and I said I can't use the one up here at the station...they said they'd look else where, so if any of you guys up north want em have at them...if someone can book them, they already have my vote, I wont even watch it!!!

Nothing much to update on, only that I'll be having a ninja and goth vampire in my movie. They forced me to put them in...or they'd have me for dinner, the next few nights...and a kick in the junk when ever Mr. Ninja pleased...so...obligations tell me to do so...for the sake of my children...

Ahh the day of the Irishman! Being Irish I love this "holiday". When its acceptable to drink beer!
Also it makes me want to find out more about my heritage. Rogans come from Ireland from a small city, from what I'm told called O'Rogan. Also back in the day it was spelt, O'Roghan. anyhoos I found our family crest...weird, but whatever

Thread is now safe...
Something thats been on my mind for awhile now. Is honesty really the best policy? I am for the most part, also depends on my environment, but I usually put everything on the table (so to speak). I don't hold anything back.
Maybe its due to the fact that I'm German, I'm short, therefor having a Neopolian complex, and think I'm a "Billy Bad ass" at whatever I do...for the most part. When I've been doing it for a while, I tend to think that way. Then along comes someone or something to set me straight.
This morning I got to the point of walking out in the middle of the show, due to my producer. Jasonthewho has seen...more heard our outbursts first hand. But we had a heart to heart talk this morning after the shows in the studio.
Turns out we are way too much alike, and I'd said something to her that hurt her feelings and she'd kept it inside, then it just erupted this morning, when I'd apologized to her about what I'd said the day of the incident. I thought it was squashed, but apparently it wasn't. But we both agree that there is definatly a problem, and at the same time we don't know what it is. We both said that there is something that infuriates the other, but we'll try to keep it professional and go back to the way things were when she first started.
Anyways, enough about me. I totally re-wrote the script, based on my memory to see if anything new would show up, and it did. So I like that exercise, write something....hold off for a few weeks, try to re-write it, see what new flavors are brought out.
Looks like April 12th will be the shooting date, for now, seems to be the vote amongst the actors. Anyhoos, I texted the composer that did Given (my lovefest entry) haven't heard back...this may be a movie with no score!!! aahhhh!!!
Dustin
UPDATE: Composer is in for a second film! So now if I can get a date set to shoot, I'll be ready to collect my prize...I mean share my movie XD

Confirmed that April 12th is the day of the shoot. That gives me plenty of time to play with post. Script is complete I will not touch it again. As far as I can see anyways.
There is only one conflict. One of the leads said that April 12th was good for him, and everyone else said it was good too...then he texted me saying, "Crap, I totally forgot that its my daughters birthday" So we'll shoot everything else on the 12th and get his stuff on the 13th if he isn't able to come out that day.
Going to find locations this weekend.
Have VFX under control.
Until next time,

Blog entry for "The Dustin Rogan Project"April 18th:
Alright so some might wonder what this film is about.... some may not give a damn...
This movie was kind of an experiment on my part. 1) To do a fun movie with everyone that could, that had been involved with any of Gary’s films or mine. 2) Was to have a little role reversal. Put myself, Gary and Matt in front of the camera, as apposed to behind the camera. To see what the people we push around have to go through. It was a learning experience.
For the past few months Gary had said, they always say that playing yourself is the hardest part to play; I don't know if I can do it. I understood what he was talking about, but at the same time I said to him "Gary, nobody knows Gary French like you do man, you've been studying him for the last 25+ years".
I will say I'm very pleased with the performances, not only by the three of us, but everyone else!
I'm taking a break from the editing process, don't want to totally consume myself with it and get to the point that I've watched it to many times, that I want to reshoot the entire thing.
So I'm warning you all now, Gary, Matt and myself aren't actors by any means, but we did a descent job. Just be wary of that whilst watching. LOL
-Dustin
PS. and if you can tell me what the movie is about I'd like to know myself...HAHAHAHAHAHA

(which I was planning on shooting during the day...DOH!!!) So that gives me 5 less hours to shoot, so we'll be pushing it on Sat. To get the opening sequence done. But I know my crew and I can do it.
More later...maybe...

May 4th:
Filming has been completed as of yesterday afternoon. It was fun shooting this movie. Jason, Gary, Matt and myself ended our day of shooting by going to see the Ironman movie. I thought it was awesome!
I'm a little red from the hour or so we were out at the shoot, but not nearly as bad as the first time shooting! I will start peiceing the movie together this evening, once I wake from my bear nap...not sleeping alot lately, what with working at 4 am, the movie, and trying to keep some kind of social life. Anyways, I'll get grabs up of what we shot yesterday up when I can (maybe later tonight).
Dustin
Update: a few updates on first page, and of course screen grabs later tonight!

Congratulations on wrapping production!!! Some of the stills looked really cool. Were those bottom 3 or 4 color corrected? Some great looks there!
Also, the grab with the big fish is impressive...but what really caught my attention was the (apparently) nude dude (you?) with another dudes head by his crotch! :D
You did get the memo about the "R" rating or below right!?! :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

ROFL!! I didn't even realize that his head was right there till someone pointed it out to me this morning at work...and yes I did go nude for this movie...I think its a DVXuser first...director does nude in his own movie, and yes its no higher than a rated R.

While editing this short, I wish I'd gone to some type of film school...or had some kind of professional training, because I know I could do so much better...but not to knock what we've done, because its pretty damn close to what I wanted. It is such an awesome feeling to actually see some resemblance of what I had in my head prior to shooting actually come out in the editing process.
Again, Gary, Matthew and myself aren't actors by any stretch of the imagination, but I thought to myself how hard is it to play yourself...but from what I hear...its pretty damn hard...but I think with the interaction between the three of us it turned out ok! for guys that are supposed to be behind the camera. Justin and Jason of course were on their A game...brought out the best Justin and Jasons they could. And who couldn't love Overweight Ninjas...or if we're being "PC" Calorifically Enhanced Martial Arts Specialist. Anyhoos...gonna go grab a square before I do work....

When I'm not at work, I've been at home nursing a bum foot. Apparently I have 1 of 2 things...a Bone Spur....or Plantar Fasciitis. Just know it hurts like hell!!! I think it happened on our last day of shooting, whilst climbing down/up a steep rocky hill, and I was in flip flops...but I'm taking the hell out of Motrin IB...about 1,200mg a day..and staying off it whenever possible. So yesterday i had a good 7 hours to work out some kinks...probably do that all day today after work, then hit the sack early and go to work on Jason's film. Sat and Sunday. thats about it for now...if anyone has had Plantar Fasciitis any tips they wanna send my way of nursing it would be greatly appreciated!!!!!

Well for the most part I'm done editing...though i've come across a problem, the audio is fine on the time line in Vegas, but once rendered, it gets out of sync in 3 spots in the short...no matter what I do...same damn three spots...erm...so if I can't figure it out...don't hold it against me please!!! its driving me crazy.
Only one more scene to do, and then score and I'll be complete.
My feet are tired from jasonthewho's short (The Five Worst Days of Bartholomew Saxton) but it was fun, even if Jason's fiance' kicked my ass in Guitar Hero...twice...

My take on the Indiana Jones Movie....
SPOILERS AHEAD: Highlight to read...
ARE YOU F'ING SERIOUS!!!! F'IN ALIENS....I was ok with the flick until the f'in space ship....then I lost it, I am one to stay for credits...but this as soon as I heard the theme music...I was out. Honestly, I don't really understand Hollywood sometimes. Why ruin a good thing? Not so much ruin...but taint...because now in a casual conversation about the Indiana Jones movies it always brought great memories then I'll now have to add a footnote (just like the Spiderman series) they should have done this, which in this case is NOT MAKE IT WITH ALIENS!!!!! This movie is very predictable, almost as predictable as my Lovefest entry (Given) I did laugh a few times at the Indiana Jones'esk characteristics and lines that you would hear him say...but really....I give it 2 stars...and thats being nice.....

INDIANA JONES SPOILER ALERT (trying to be vague, but just in case)
To be fair, all the Indiana Jones films deal with similarly out there themes. And all have just as ridiculous endings.

Beer not a problem! Depends on where you go...I'd think Dallas or Austin would be more suited to film making. Any Austin DVXuser's down...know this would be a big task to take on but it'd be flippin awesome! And my crew and I are definatly down with chilling with our fellow DVXusers.

Great pic! I don't know why I didn't have her crew for Bartholomew Saxton. I'm sure she would have been the most professional one there.
That couldn't be more true!

Great pic! Reminds me of my own daughter, who's getting married this Saturday. You really have to appreciate those moments, they'll be grown up and gone in a flash.
I'm diggin' the thread as well, you're very entertaining in a goofy bizarre sort of way ;)
I also have to agree with the Indiana Jones take, I know Spielberg has a hard on for Aliens, but they don't have to be in everything he does.
Whats next, an alien skeleton found at Auschwitz, spaceships on the shores of Normandy, dinosaurs from Mars? Enough with the aliens Steven.

I'm sure there is a script on Spielbergs desk for each of those...
