Thanks Barry Green for your informative and entertaining
"Canon 7D, meet - some peers" which I just read.
http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=186911

(At least I clued into your post #167 re "impossible to ship all 3 cameras.")

What I'd also dearly like to see are some real-world comparisons of the image qualities from the myriad compression codecs (as produced by their cameras). I'm talking about the various rates and flavors of AVCHD, MPEG2, AVC-I, XDCAM EX, other MPEG4, the "4 simultaneous DV codecs" that is DVCPro-HD, MJPEG, and so forth.

In my attempt at self-education, I can attest to the fact that you can Google all day (weeks as I have) and find not a thing about the relative IQs of these codecs. Lots on compression rates. Lots on other tech specs. Nothing on what they actually look like on the screen.

Is the "new, advanced, super-efficient high-tech" AVCHD 24Mb/s better than the "old-school, yesterday's-news MPEG2 I frame?" Who knows? Especially if you don't give a hoot about efficiency in today's world of cheap & plentiful memory. What if your more important criteria is image quality and lack of compression artifacts?

For me, nothing says low quality (& amateur) than digitally breaking-up footage. Think MPEG1. Personally I can't even consider sharpness and colour rendition unless, at least, image integrity needs are met. (Maybe I was spoiled by 3/4 inch? ;^)

So needed is a side-by side comparison and/or judgment-call derived from various cameras running difficult scenes like sports action, windy leaves, waterfalls, that sort of thing.

As a benchmark, I would suggest comparing against a very good Blu-ray movie since that is what audiences are required to accept.

As an HDCAM producer, I find the new technologies both mesmerizing and a tad bewildering.
And from there plug into the A/C adapter for the camera itself?
If that's all possible, the one thing I noticed is that the Prowatt 300 Power Inverter say 12-14 volts and that batteries all seem to run at 14.4 volts. Will the Inverter handle the 14.4?

A Lengthy, Editorial Review of the JVC HM100

God, I should post this somewhere else… I started out simply, and it turned into a verbose expanse on this camera that is totally excessive, but this...

God, I should post this somewhere else… I started out simply, and it turned into a verbose expanse on this camera that is totally excessive, but this should answer any and all questions you have… I hope.

I think, and many will agree, that the HM100 is a LOT sharper than the HVX. That's the thing about the HM100 that everyone notices. I have used the HVX200 (not the HVX200a, just fyi) for several projects (though I only own a DVX personally) and my film school utilizes about 20 of these JVC cameras for student rental. I'm about to shoot with the HM100 for my next project with my Brevis set-up. I have seen virtually no HM100 adapter footage, so we'll see how it goes...

Obviously, the HVX is a more professional camera, and the DVCPRO format... sometimes seems to be better than the HM100's codec... sometimes not. The main shit about the HM100 that I've noticed, and that most people seem to be impressed/concerned with are as follows:

Sometimes, the JVC yields TOO much detail, and it looks like... too sharp (believe me, I would never have thought this would be considered a problem, but it looks almost like... too enhanced. If you want any kind of chance at achieving the ever-illusive “filmic look”, don't even think about it without an adapter. There JVC has vertical, and over-all detail level controls featured in the menu settings. The detail level should generally be lowered on most cameras, but for the JVC, I would suggest pushing it waaay down, if not all the way.

The "scene file settings" are a more primitive, less extensive/effective attempt to mimic Panasonic's unrivaled Scene Files Settings, which allow for brilliant on-board camera adjustments. All of these complaints aside, if you consider that the JVC is a consumer level camera, the level of picture adjustment control that it offers is pretty impressive compared to those on other consumer cameras. It has some basic gamma settings, temp shift, matrix, knee, sharpness, and a couple other settings that aren't as vital, but nice to have. THE JVC IS NOT A PROFESSIONAL CAMERA, and so the "scene file settings" are not anything near the versatility of the real settings offered on the HVX and higher-end camera.

How does Panasonic’s DVCPRO HD compare to the HM100’s alleged utilization of the XDCAM EX codec? Well… I guess that JVC managed to get the rights to use Sony's XDCAM EX codec on the HM100, supposedly identical to that on the EX1/EX3... But I’m not so sure. The HM100 does not produce footage at the quality of the EX1 or EX3 footage, (again, this is not a pro camera) but the footage has a semi-similar feel to it, certainly as far as the sharpness, but does NOT get near the EX’s beautiful colors...)

I think it’s safe to say that the above mentioned inferiority of the HM100 to the EX1/EX3 can be mostly attributed to the JVC’s Ľ-inch CCDs inherent sub ordinance to the EX1/EX3’s edition of three HALF INCH (!) CCDs. There are many HD broadcast cameras that cost tens of thousands of dollars that only feature a single 2/3” (and yes, 2/3” is sizable enough that one will suffice, and the other features on these cameras are obviously better than the relatively inexpensive EX cameras… but that’s another rant entirely). Essentially, for the price of the EX cameras, and the price of the JVC, you are paying more for a reason, and like I said, this concept of “price reasoning” is done because the more expensive the camera, the more the camera will offer. There is a direct correlation to price, and quality compromises in this industry; you get what you pay for.

The JVC is NOT FULL HD LIKE ADVERTISED... technically. It's complicated really... The HM100 kind of ‘cheats’ the same way that the HDV codec does: It doesn't compress the video in the same way, for HDV’s bit rate is only 25mb/sec, verses the HM100's 35mb/sec, so there are numbers to back up its superiority to HDV/DV as far as the integrity of the footage, but there are similar compromises. Just like HDV, the JVC actually sub-samples the "full raster" HD (1080p) down to 1080i (1440x1080), which is stupid, and baffling. I am not sure how they get away with advertising it as full 1920x1080, because somewhere along the line, it does sub-sample the image resolution. I will admit that I have only heard about this nefarious sub-sampling through word of mouth, and I don’t fully understand why/how/when it does this in the recording process, but I would be surprised… So yeah, the gist of this rant is that if you want FULL, real HD footage... EX3 is the way to go, unless you can afford something better. And there’s always the unrivaled Canon 5d Mark II ☺

HOWEVER... In both cameras, the color sampling is 4:2:0, the recording format is MPEG2, the color depth is 8bit, the bit rate is 35mb/sec (although I thought EX cams did 50mb/sec, but I guess not. Apparently-- according to my online research findings --the HM100 can output a full raster HD signal at 4:2:2 if you hook it up to an external encoder/recorder like the AJA I/O HD, a Matrox, or similar I/O set-up using the full-size HDMI-out cable in the back of the HM100, then patch it up to a Firestore or something. This is another thing that I have only read about, and I’m not sure if this is actually possibly, much less what the results are like, for I have yet to see sample footage from this workflow… You can do this with the EX1/EX3 for the same result and it is certainly intriguing, and potentially deal-make/breaking if you REALLY want to set up some huge, cumbersome rig that costs more than the camera just to get the full quality footage. (If you are willing to do this, it will cost MORE than an EX3, which would be just like this ridiculous set-up, but WAY more practical, professional, diverse, reputable, manually adjustable... and cooler, of course. But really… get a 5d

However, the conveyance of shooting tapeless, cheap, solid state media with NO POST RENDERING OR PROCESSING DURING (as far as importing/basic cutting goes...) and this makes it the obvious choice HANDS DOWN over ANY HDV camera. I would choose the HM100 over any -any- HDV camera in a heart beat.

The JVC is a great progression in the budding technology going 1000 miles a minute these days, but it lacks some professional features that really make some of the basic aspects of shooting a little more of a pain in the ass than they should be. I am getting tired of talking, and I’m sure you are to. The issues I went into in-depth above are my main concerns, and the rest of the shit with this camera, I’ll just cover briefly.

After using it, I’ll say this: the focus/zoom ring in one is a genius idea, but could be limiting, and a little annoying at times. But for the price, an actual ring is impressive, and I can’t complain really. The gain functions are located as a switch on the side, like most pro cameras, but I HATE gain functions on all cameras (though the HM100 handles higher gain very well, I still don’t trust it, and I would sooner re-light, or reschedule a shoot if that was the last resort). The part I hate most about the camera (most people agree) is that the primary functions of shutter speed, and iris control are not dials, or easy-access buttons like most pro cameras, they that accessible through an annoying little button setup on the back of the camera behind the LCD, and I hate that I can’t quickly access these rudimentary adjustments. Also, the menu is all accessed and controlled with a flimsy little joystick on the outer left side of the LCD, and it usually gets kind of annoying to navigate. A lot of the features and adjustments are hard to find in the menu, and are not the most intuitive. The white balance function works ok, and working with the DVX/HVX, I am used to not being able to numerically adjust the Kelvin temperature (which is a nice feature of say, the EXs and the XH-A1, among others…) but I would have loved to see this feature on this camera. Again, there is auto, and manual WB, but an actual Kelvin numerical adjustment control would be amazing… Another reason to get a 5d ☺ The inclusion of XLR inputs was a very good idea. Get an external audio recorder if you can—the sound quality of the onboard mixer isn’t great, and I have actually had the HM100 fuck up the sound, and the mixer kind of… tweaked out and stopped working. I’ll have to see if this is a recurring issue with more use, but I hope it was just a fluke. The onboard mic sucks, but at least there’s no recording noise for it to pick up with the solid-state recording. But the on-board mic still sucks, so avoid it at all costs. The filter threads are a weird size (46mm I believe…) but I guess step-up rings negate this issue. The inclusion of 24p, 60p, and 30p is a wonderful edition that I wouldn’t even consider the camera without, but the progressive rates are solid, and the simplicity of purely Quicktime files with no transcoding make the workflow very, very easy, and generally appealing. I have heard it has a focus assist, which I didn’t know about when I was using it, but I am excited about this, especially considering that the LCD is kind of small.

OK, I’m so tired of typing, and you are tired of reading.

End advice: This is a great camera, but it’s a passing phase that will be outdated soon enough, and I think it’s too expensive, considering the competitive prices of similar cameras. Basically, I am hinting that while the DLSR video revolution is a very new technology, and it too will be outdated soon enough, but I am convinced that it will outlast this camera. The 5d does all that this camera does (including the same deal with the HDMI out 4:2:2, but at 10bit!) along with sooo many more settings to customize, and at about $1000 less than the HM100… I see no reason whatsoever to buy the HM100.

Go get a 5d Mark II!

But If I don't ask I'll never know. Here goes ...

If I plan to produce a video for the web only, does it matter whether I shoot using the PAL or NTSC settings? The reason I ask is, I'm editing on Final Cut Express, which doesn't do 24fps. But I was wondering if I could get some of that effect shooting at 25 in PAL (FCE can handle that at 720p).

And if I do that, does it mean I can't burn the video on DVD and show it on TV in North America?

I've also tried to sync up audio from a soundboard mix and have had the same results. I'm not sure if its a capturing problem, camera maybe recording fast problem, or both.

Here is a plan I have devised for a DMT job where we will only be able to use laptops on set and the kit must be pretty small and fast.

As for the plan, I am trying to stay very portable and as such I want to be based off of a laptop for the majority of the shoot. My plan is to use a Macbook Pro to transfer footage to while on location every day to a 2 hard drive system that will be in a hot swap RAID case through an esata express card adapter. One HDD will be a 1TB or possibly 2TB drive that will contain one copy of the footage up to the amount that fills the drive and then we will move on through as many drives as we need in sequence. The other drive will be a transfer drive that we will have 4 of and we will bring back and forth with me every day to the hotel or base to be downloaded to a 6 - 2TB drive RAID5 (10TB total after RAID5 loss of one drive). This way there will always be two drives with the data on them at any one time until the data gets to the RAID5 that I would like to set up in the office/base. That transfer drive will go back to the field the next day or day after that after transferring over night with checksum sequences in use.

To simplify:

Data from RED Drive, CF Card, RED RAM gets transferred simultaneously to a large, single backup drive and a smaller faster transfer drive on set by MBP. There will also be visual verification by playing the clips on by one.

The transfer drive gets carried to the base where it is downloaded with checksum to a Mac Pro with 10TB RAID5. Here the rushes and syncing will be done.

When full the individual 2TB drives from set will be stored elsewhere as a backup.

In this way we will have 1 RAID5 master drive that editing can be done off of and if one drive fails we just pop in another one and rebuild it at any time. The backup will consist of the non-raided individual 2TB drives.

What do you guys think about this approach?

I have been doing a lot of work with my EX-1 with footage that's suppose to go online. I just bumped up to FCP7, and I had a vimeo droplet that compressed it to exactly the size and settings for YouTube and Vimeo (There is a tutorial on Vimeo about it that I can't find now), but when I upgraded my FCP Studio, the droplet stopped working. I have 1080 24P fooatage that I want to be compressed for the site, so if you guys have any links, tips, advice, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks guys.

I need help with making a poster for a fabricated vampire movie. The poster (which is being used as a prop) will be hanging in a theater as my main actress/actors goes into the theater to see a vampire movie. The poster is not for the main film but just a prop for a scene in the main film.

I can give credit to the artist for making the poster in the film credits and also give the artist a copy of the poster signed by the New Zealand cast. I’m tight on budget but I can pay the artist agreed amount.

I am helping out on a project with some editing and sound design. I received an uncompressed .mov file of the film and I can't pull in the footage on my PC (sound pulls in fine). From what I've read, it appears that what I received was a QT file that was rendered out of FCP on a Mac. And apparently, there's no way I can get to the footage without it going back into FCP and rendering out to a PC compatible format. The original XDCAM files from the camera are no longer available. This file is the whole enchilada, in a nutshell.

Does this sound right? Any ideas or suggestions?

Thanks for your time and help.

I'd like to take my HVX and interview people on the street. Afterward, I'd like to hand them a card that reads something like:

Go see yourself on-line. Visit http://website.com/you/________________

On-site I would write in a number that would later correspond to their specific video. They do this with photographs at Yankees Stadium. Someone take your picture, they hand you card, and they hand-write the gallery number. When you're in the gallery, you find your photo and then you can choose to buy it or not.

Any ideas on how to streamline the "code" prcoess? Maybe make it relate to a filename on the P2 card? I'm really looking for any ideas aside from just starting at the number 1 and moving up. I'd also like to not have to think about it. In other words, if it relates to something on the camera then there is little room for error. Timecode could be option I guess but that seems cumbersome and limiting. Any advice would be obliged.

What do you guys think of this lens? Has anyone here used it to shoot video on a DSLR?

I'm thinking I should get either this lens, or the Sigma 30mm f1.4 for a 7D.

Do you guys think that it's too wide for a general purpose all round prime lens? I wanna use it for narrative films and music-videos. It has a FoV of 32mm after (x1.6) crop. I was told most films are shot between 25mm - 35mm. This would be perfect, no?

Any feedback would be much appreciated :) Thanks :)

It's quite pricey, but I'm wondering whether the information and techniques covered would be worth it. Maybe there is a good book (although the idea of shooting video on DSLRs is relatively new so probably not)?

Anyways, if anyone has taken a look at this, let me know what you think. Thanks.

I'm getting ready to go on my first HD and first HPX170 shoot - I thought I would be getting a new macpro quadcore and FCP latest, but based on the nature of my shooting and short time in the field, I had to spend a chunk on 2 E type 64G cards. Due to slow download issues w/ the 64G cards. Now I'm short on cash.

I saw in a post that Barry Green is not an FCP user. I need some thoughts from more experienced people because I have been afraid that Premiere and Vegas would have many issues and I'd have problems solving them without much support (Canopus, Avid & Media 100 look too expensive as it is).

How important is it for me to ante up for a current MAC solution, can I cheap out and get a used laptop to handle near term needs (like simple editing, some color correcting and perhaps speed adjustments or trimming edges to get a better frame). How easy is it to be successful on a PC solution?

Note I am set up to use Barry's gigabit ethernet transfer to the mac. I'll be downloading my 2 64G cards at night to two hard drives.

I am a seasoned still photog with 30+ years of SLR and DSLR time, but relatively low videography time. Just got the 7D and am wondering a couple of things:

(1) Will any shotgun mic work on this mount? I have an old Sony from about 10 years ago that is made to fit on the top of my old Sony camcorder. Planning on some other sort of external mic in the future...maybe a Rode?

(2) When I shot tv spots before with the little camcorder (was years before the HD revolution) the Sony had an audio out headphone jack so I could wear headphones and clearly hear the audio coming in. Can't find one on the 7D. Do the modern external mics like the Rode Stereo VideoMic have headphone jacks? Or what workaround is required to be able to wear headphones while shooting to monitor audio?

I earn my living as a professional magician / mentalist. I have always been disappointed by the quality of magic/mentalism promos. So I decided I was going to approach the genre as a filmmaker would; using story and actors

I created this promo for a company that sells high end items to the Mentalism community. It has been receiving great reactions. The piece will be featured on the company's site.

Thanks for watching

What program or method do you use to look inside a video clip and see what exactly its specs are such as framerate, field dominance, all that stuff?

Also... this is kind of weird but when I open up a clip using the mac spacebar preview, it looks like this:

http://img337.imageshack.us/i/badimage.jpg/

Why is that happening and what is causing it?

When I open it in quicktime player though.. it plays just fine. So which image should I believe? What does it actually look like?

Thanks

I am looking for a better work flow as far as syncing double system audio tracks from my zoom H4n in Premiere CS4 to my Gh1 clips.
I have no problem syncing to the slate claps, it's just after I have done that I would like to be able to replace the gh1 original audio with the new zoom audio track and move on. I tried on the last project to group the clips when moving or editing on the timeline but it seems they would not always stay grouped. I know there must be a simple way without having to sync and export a movie of each clip. Anyone have a good fast work flow method to simplify this?
Help appreciated.

So, it's come time for me to get a set of filters...not going to the MB route yet.

UV - I recall someone posting a big shootout of UV filters by a well known photographer which has surprising results - a traditional favorite was beaten by what is commonly considered a subpar brand, or something like that. Anyone still have that link?

Vari-ND - I don't want to go the premade route, I'd rather just buy a circular and linear polarizers and stack them. What are recommendations here?
