I found a link to a report on the process behind the hack. You can see for yourself it's not gonna be easy.
1st of november 2009 http://magiclantern.wikia.com/wiki/Firmware_file I can't wait to have this hack on my 7D!

We'll I'd say they at least let him in the stadium. Now he has to provided some sort of id to get him past security, then they will let him on the field. Then their will be one more step after that which will allow him to then be allowed to PLAY BALL.
I tried to use an analogy that we all could follow, considering the World Series is going on right now, hope it helped.

The firmware flasher routine appears to have some sort of SHA1 checksum applied, possibly as an HMAC, which is why It is necessary to figure out how the camera recognizes a valid firmware file to be able to load my own code. This is the first step to getting a clean ROM dump from the camera, which will then be analyzed to find the functions that Magic Lantern uses for writing to the audio device, the screen and reading the buttons. Once I have a firmware file that the camera will validate, I'm all ready to generate the ROM dump -- that part of the code was fairly easy to extract from the 1.0.9 upgrade. It appears that we're using a loophole in the 5D firmware verification to be able to to avoid the verification step, which is why it ran without any problems. |

Thanks Hudson for the update. I know I check the Magic Lantern google group every six hours looking for an update, I'm sure there are a few others just as obsessed with having ML on their 7D as well.

Thanks Husdon, I didn't expect the creator of Magic Lantern himself to answer on the thread! Btw, great work on the canon 5D mark ii. You can consider yourself famous in the world of indie cinema, and publicity for that matter.

If it would be in Chinese I could not understand less.
Actuary I have no idea how to even start to get past the security. I´m looking devoutly and flabbergasted at your work Tramm. Thanks for what you are doing for the community. Frank

can someone tell us newbies what hacking the firmware has allowed on the 5D, and what it might allow on the 7D?
