Default The Girl from Yesterday

Hey guys! My 30 minutes romantic comedy The Girl from Yesterday is in post production! It's been a brutal two weeks but the film is 90% shot. We've still got some pickup shootings to do and it's going to be hell in post because we've only got less than a week to go. We're premiering it at a showcase on Nov. 2nd and 3rd at 7:30 pm on the U.C. Berkeley campus. If any of you guys are in Berkeley and can come out to that it would be awesome!

I've been preparing the script since June and finished around October, although all shooting was compressed into the last two weeks so that the film can be ready in time for the showcase. I was just going to shoot 24p SD on the XH-A1 for easy editing but decided to go HD 24F at the last moments. The extra resolution looks gorgeous of course, but I hope I won't have to pay the price for it in editing. All of the dolly shots were achieved with the IndieSnap! Flex Track, which is really amazing for the price.

dvxuser Alan Chang is doing sound for this project and user Nic Aragon have also been super nice by lending me the light kit. This is going to be something special and I can't wait to see what it looks like when I finally edit it.

UPDATE: The film is finally DONE! Link to it below. It's a 334 mb Quicktime. Enjoy!

I really hate to double post, but i just gotta say after watching it tonight up at UC Berkeley, I was really entertained, and very happy with how great it turned out. Speaking of turnouts, the crowd was at capacity, and they were laughing , oohing and "awwwww" (even the guys awwwed) at the touching moments in this flick. It was incredibly relatable, the comic timing was so spot on, and i loved how you homaged your fave flicks and paid tribute.

Thanks for this flick, even though parking was a pain, traffic was a nightmare and seating was at best limited, id go through 10x worse to be able to watch with the crowd again!

Congrats bro, great job to everyone involved! Even the credits were good!

Thanks for the kind words Nic . After this week I'm going to start putting together a longer cut of the film (had to cut some stuff out due to time constraint of the show) and do a final sound mix for the DVD. I'll be sure to get you one once it's done. And hopefull I'll be able to post the film here after I'm done.

Shawn, I believe Alan was using a Sound Device 302 mixer with the AT 4073a and AKG C451B going into the camera and a Zoom H4. We actually forgot to slate the takes so he had to spend quite a bit of time syncing the audio. I believed he got like 4 or 5 hours of sleep in the 72 hours leading to the premiere, yet he still delivered a great mix!

Okay. I just noticed this in the section and wanted to share a bit.

MAJORITY of the interior shots were used with the AKG C451b's. Had a pair, didn't need two. Up to this point, I can definitely say that having good booming techniques weighs much more than having an expensive mic. Probably a few of you are wondering why I specifically chose the C451's. I've used it in the past and have received a tremendous amount of positive feedback when I gave the dailies to one of my Supervising Sound Editors (Brad Semenoff on DVXuser) on a previosproject. He called me up and told me how the production sound went so well that the signal I was sending to the cameras were very useful. There was this one part of the scene where I used a pair of the 451s and O.o I was surprised at how they picked up. Yeah, it's not a very flat mic, but it's good with a little crisp on top. Things worked out great.

Also, both Huy and I had the AT4073a so consistency was always there if I couldn't make it to a shoot. Huy can testify, too, that it really boils down to who is booming. Practice, Practice, Practice!

Sleep was a BIG problem, but I managed to pull it through. Luckily we got most of the footages and audio done right ON TIME to premiere in one of the school's lecture hall. I couldn't make it the first premiere, so I came back the second day to watch it. Amazing!!! The whole place was packed and heat was building up. There are still several more editings to fix before we call it a wrap, but overall we're impressed.

Before someone starts ranting me about using the H4 as a recorder, I must admit, I got used to this thing rather than the HDP2 or the trusty/bulky PD-4's. My motivation in using this device was to keep everything simple. Fortunately I knew where everything was, so it wasn't that awful to match sound to takes.

There were a lot of accessories with me, but you basically have an idea of what I mainly used.
